Nagi no Asukara : The Chilly Desert

Episode 2

We got to meet all the characters last week! Including rather grumpy Hikari, rather cute and adorable Manaka and fish fetish boy Tsumugu.

Chisaki and Kaname too but they didn't do much... Ohh and Lord Uroko!

***SPOILERS***

Manaka's fish left her, awww poor her!

So she goes to see Lord Uroko and throws food at him. Tsumugu liked the fish so I'm guessing she's trying to get him to put it back there so that Tsumugu will like her.... Silly girl! (Ukoro just liked to be fed.)

So Hikari is as grumpy as ever. Once more he makes Manaka upset, what a mean git.

Outside the school he bumps into the two kids from the other episode that was "chewing gum graffiti" what turns out to be Hikari's sisters shop wall (so they were on land!)

Tsumugu offers to do a voluntary Boatdrift doll thing seeing the adults no longer want to do it, after he volunteers so do the underwater students. It turns out that Tsumugu really loves their village and the sea, this just makes Manaka like him even more and makes Hikari even more grumpy.

Hehehe Hikari see's his sister kissing someone from the surface and gets all upset. Actually... It isn't quite funny Kaname tells them that if she does date someone from the surface she'll be banished from the sea. It obviously touches a nerve with Manaka who gets shouted at by the very short fused Hikari, who then also shouts at Chisaki and makes her cry before getting told off by Kaname.

And Manaka is so cute she finds out what Tsumugu's surname is so she doesn't upset Hikari.

There is a little bit of "The Little Mermaid" in Manaka but also it seems that Tsumugu might be the opposite way around.

Awww the teacher and Tsumugu are making a watering hole for them so they don't have to go to the sea all the time.

And Manaka is still trying to get cursed.

Poor Akari they've found out about her dating a guy on the surface. Not good.

The novelty so far hasn't rubbed off, the characters and the story are strong enough that it really isn't going to be a problem in my opinion.

I quite like the relationships between the characters and in a way the fact that some of these kids are being put into really adult and scary situations without knowing it. I mean lets face it, their parents have sent them to this school, its obvious that they interact on a daily basis (whether for work or whatever) with the land people yet kids aren't meant to fall in love?

Really?!

They were the ones that shut down the school, if only four of them really then went to this new school on the surface (because their school was shut down) what are they meant to do? All act like Hikari and hate everyone on land?

I'm having a rant but trust me its because it hit me quite hard just how.... Dogmatic these rules seem to be, and the horrible thing is that Manaka (and to be fair the other three) are in a position that their parents put on them to mingle and interact with people on land but they don't know that if they develop feelings, it seems it doesn't matter if its a one off you'll be out of the village pronto.

I also like how Tsumugu seems to love their village and the thought of it, though I've noticed how unfair it is that the underwater guys can come onto land but the land dwellers can't get underwater. I guess that is the way it goes though! Give up your home and you can't return.

I like it, there is the right blend of comedy and drama and as you like the characters you care about their story. I mean I could possibly see one or two character traits getting on my nerves but the understated wonders of Kaname and Chisaki is wonderful. I don't like how she's going to settle to be Hikari's replacement for Manaka when her and Kaname look so cute together.

This anime has charm and an interesting story of a divide between people who shouldn't be divided. It'll make interesting viewing to see how the children learn to accept, if they even bother to learn to accept, the kids from the sea.

Overall a really nice anime.
