Nagi no Asukara : Between the sea and land

Episode 1

A story that seems to be set underwater or some such thing. Incredible!

This looks like it is possibly going to be super adorable at times so I can't wait to see what happens.

***SPOILERS***

So they can actually cook underwater! I never knew that.

So their school has shut down and Hikari and two of his friends decide to wear their old school uniform to their new school but Manaka has decided to try and blend in instead. He does seem quite mean to be honest! He left without Manaka taking Chisaki and Kaname with him. She herself gets caught in some kind of net.

The kid that was on the boat that pulled Manaka out of the water just so happens to be in their class as well much to the happiness of Manaka. Hikari doesn't actually look like he wants to blend in or make friends.

Chewing Gum Graffitti? Horrid! And Hikari is going to eat pork. NOT PORK!

So some of the older men call Hikari in to tell them about Manaka being fished up, they tell him the Boatdrift Ceremony has been cancelled. We then learn that all humans came from the sea but some went to the land and to make sure that the God of the sea thought kindly of them they sacrificed maidens in the Boatdrift Ceremony (though now they've replaced it with fruit, vegetables and spices etc...)

Hikari apologises to Manaka and they go to Lord Uroko for Spirit Fire. Now Lord Uroko is cool.... If a tiny bit pervy! And I like the idea of Spirit Fire.

After throwing food in Lord Uroko's face he curses Manaka by putting a fish on her knee... Yes he is that childish for what sounds like a "God" of some sort. Pretty funny though!

The people at that school are really bloody mean! They upset Manaka so much she runs off and falls down a hill.

Being out of the sea for so long their skin starts to crack and Chisaki started to get a headache. Turns out she quite likes Hikari and Kaname thinks that she and Hikari look like a couple and Manaka is their kid.

The fisher boy finds Manaka and brings him home with him. His father tells him to fill a bathtub with salt water and put her in so he does and her cracked skin goes back to normal. Ohhhh fish boy has a thing for fish it seems. Tsumugu is the name of the boy with the fish fetish.

Interesting.

I quite like the idea of having people on land and people in the sea, not sure what I feel about the fact we have to hate each other but there you go. Interesting idea.

The characters are all very likable. Manaka is a girl you can get behind, she seems to be innocent and easily upset (easily made happy too!) and you are already kind of wishing her and Tsumugu on. Hikari is a little less easy to like but still likable, the problem I'm having is I'm not sure what his feelings for Manaka really are, I'm not seeing the "kid" vibe, nor am I getting the "couple" vibe from him and Chisaki. That will probably become clearer as time goes on. Chisaki and Kaname are sweet but we've hardly seen them. The biggest impression was Lord Uroko, what a fun character he looks to be! And even Hikari's parents and what I'm guessing is Tsumugu's father (or grandfather) seem pretty nice characters that draw your interest.

There was a nice little bit of background but I think the main thing is that it was a easy to follow story, the background you needed to know was there, forecasting of future plot points were also planted but mainly it drove home the characters. Who they are and what to look out for with them.

I enjoyed it, was interesting and fun at the same time.

The best thing about it was that it looked a million dollars! It is a beautiful anime especially when you get underwater.I loved how.... Real they made having people and fish live together look, and how effortlessly they went from walking about LIKE THEY WERE ON LAND to swimming about. Also a nice touch is not throwing it in our faces that they are underwater, the bit where he talks to the women outside the shop could have easily been on land (was it? It might have been!) other then a few errand fish here and there or the vast scooping landscape portraits of where they are with swarms of fish sometimes you don't know where you are.

And I like that! I mean it might get a little confusing with some stories but I don't want to be taken out of the story and hit in the face with "THEY ARE IN THE SEA GET IT?!" Yeah I get it.

All in all this is something I think I'm looking forward to rather a lot! And I get to see episode 2 straight afterwards!
