Gin no Saji : Hachiken Meets Pork Bowl

Episode 3

He finally got up on a horse last week! What a guy.

The fun continues now with the added fun of Equestrian club.

***SPOILERS***

We start with a Churchill quote. "Dogs look up to us. Cats look down on us. Pigs treat us as equals." Well said really!

So we are learning about pigs today are we? Ohhh PIGLETS! Everyone loves them and think they are cute... I agree the piglets are adorable!

We learn that the higher up the mother the piglets are feeding off of the bigger they'll be because the more milk there is available to them. Apparently they kind of like "fight" it out and then get attached to where they are in the line and Hachiken starts to feel bad for the runt.

Next day after working on the stables Hachiken and Mikage go on a "date" to see Mikage's horse in the races at the race track. Komaba is there too as well as Nakajima-sensei. Oh and so is Tamako.

Now I have to say this race thing looks very cruel, I guess horses do tend to pull along a lot of heavy loads but that just seems mean. Anyway after looking like he was going to win Mikage's horse came in third.

Komaba asks the difficult question of why Hachiken is here and when they find out that he came because he was "lost" Komaba thinks its lame. Mikage tries to calm them by taking them to Mikagehomare's stables.

They visit the vet that is looking after the horses and Hachiken is told to be a vet they have to struggle against the reality of having to put animals down.

So the "Golden Week" is over and everyone is back at school after going off to help on their farms. Hachiken tells Aikawa about what he learnt and it leads Aikawa to think he might not be able do it after all.

Back with the pigs and the girls are telling Hachiken not to name the piglet that he loves so much but Tamako tells him to call it Pork Bowl and so he is named and we find out that they'll be turned into bacon in three months.

Wow lots of information there, I liked all the stuff about the pigs. I also already know you shouldn't name your livestock if you plan on killing them later because you become attached, that piece of information I actually amazingly found in Alex James autobiography.

So the little piglet is Pork Bowl, actually that is pretty cool.

The hardest thing for Hachiken is getting away from feeling sorry for the animals, he is trying to treat them like they are animals and just doesn't understand that they can't be treated the same at all. It is sad, I personally love animals and think a lot of things that happen to them are cruel but then again it is life and if you want to work on a farm or in that area or even in his case where he just signed up for this school thinking it'll be the easy life you have to face the facts.

It'll be interesting to see how Hachiken takes it all the longer he stays. The other students kind of grew up with it whilst I think him being a city kid and usually nowhere near the animals he ends up eating kind of thinks the world should be a fairer place for all.

I wonder if we end up killing Pork Bowl. Now he's named the piglet even we're going to get attached!

I liked the episode, I think one thing that I really will be interested with this series is finding out about the various animals. Already its given me such an insight and I'd be interested to know if anyone out there actually can confirm if any of this is true, I will probably google it myself but I just find it interesting!

The episode was a lot of good fun though and we got to know one of the other students a little better as well which is nice. I quite like Komaba and the fact that his father is dead and he's there training to take over the farm whilst his mum looks after it at the moment is really sweet.

Good episode, and man are the piglets adorable!
