Mahou Sensou : Midsummer Magical Girl

Episode 1

Back to the world of magical girls and fantasy lands. Mahou Sensou is about Takeshi Nanase who suddenly bumps into a magician called Mui Aiba who suddenly turns him into a magician, his peaceful life won't be the same again!

One day I'll get bored of these magic action anime's!

***SPOILER***

Alright... So this is slightly brilliant!

I couldn't look away, I mean I fell in love with the characters easy and I understood all the plot and the action was great.

Mui is a wonderful character, Takeshi is brave I'll give him that but I'm more interested in Isoshima and Ida who are both really fun characters and just so normal.

OK so lets get things straight.

There are two worlds the Living World and the Ruined World. The Magician's live in the Ruined World. Mui escapes the Ruined World running away from her brother who has had his memories altered, she falls out of a door and is saved (kind of) by Takeshi, but because she shoots at him (misses) he absorbs the magic and becomes a Magician himself. Kids/teenagers can become Magicians but adults can't.

Slowly each of the three non-Magic kids get exposed to magic meaning by the end Mui is taking Takeshi, Isoshima and Ida back to the Ruined World where they will be safe and learn how to control their magic.

Oh and not only that but if you use your magic against another Magician in the Living world you meet a brutal end. Nice one!

It went by in a flash but it was just so gripping it didn't matter.

The story was a simple one to follow, very normal kind of story for a magic action story. The characters didn't really do much but you got a good feeling for them. The story was very much a setting up piece for the future, getting the three non-magical kids to the Ruined World, showing off what their magic is etc without having it spread out too long.

I like that because we'll get to the good bit faster. There seems to be some sort of bad story with Takeshi's family and there is a worry that it could eat up a lot of time, but seeing he's already in the Ruined World I don't have to worry too much about that yet.

It was refreshing, even though there are girls using magic it isn't magical girls with silly transformations and glitter and all that. The magic effect looks like regeneration effects in Doctor Who, the characters are all normal and Mui is a gun wielding girl in a respectable enough looking uniform.

Now that is more then just a win for me, that is a ultra win.

I can't say it looks anything special, the scenery is rather dull and drab, but that isn't important. The story wins out this time which is good.

Just tips the balance to greatness me thinks. But only just!
