Hoozuki no Reitetsu : Demons and Underwear and Crabs / The State of Hell, and This and That

Episode 2

An introduction into the strange minds of King Emna of Hell and his second in command Hozuki ensured that we shall forever look at Ayers Rock and Platypus in a different light from now on in.

This fun little show actually nearly left me speechless with its well timed humour and wonderfully exciting characters. Lets see how the two stories of episode 2 hold up.

***SPOILERS***

So one of the little demons is singing about underwear, actually the underwear song is very catchy, though Hozuki's idea of Italian men has to be ratified! And the Kings punishment for Panty thieves? Have them swaddled in pants worn by a demon for 99 years, how much I love this King!

So we also get to meet European Hell's master... Satan.

I loved the continuation, we saw the gift Hozuki brought back for Emna from Australia. It gave the series a more flowing feel, now it really does seem that each story even though being different will flow from one to the other. Which is great because it gives it the chance to expand certain themes over a few episodes (something shorts like Miss Monochrome and Super Seisyan Brothers never did.)

Getting to meet more and more people in Hell is also very interesting as well as the different types. We've now been to the River Styx, Mortal Hell and Animal Cruelty Hell. My personal favourite is Animal Cruelty Hell because... Well lets just say my opinion is that animal cruelty deserves its own hell where the animals can take revenge, but that is just my opinion....

Seeing how everyone works and gets on is another interesting point. I liked seeing the two young demons who have obviously only started work there and have to work their way up, I also love seeing the animals from episode one every now and again.

Have to say the first part of the episode was much more laugh at the one particular joke (underpants) which I didn't find funny until the big punchline of whilst Hozuki was talking to the half normal demon the stupid one was witnessing the snake in the River Styx eating a giant crab.

The second half was much better paced and much more fun, with Hozuki taking Satan for a tour around Japanese Hell and finally terrifying Satan to the point he prays to GOD to save him! The whole tour was a masterpiece I think, you start off with Satan plotting to take over this part of Hell, you see him underestimate them because of Enma's stupidity and then slowly grow to be terrified of Hozuki, leading into this episodes final big joke of Satan reading a manuscript in Hozuki's room where he's misspelt Santa as Satan and Satan thinks he's going to cook him.

All very funny.

I like how it isn't taking itself seriously at all and the two stories (and all four so far) have been so different to each other but at the same time kind of weave together.

We are forever learning more about Hozuki and Enma but at the same time it really is just a show that you can put your feet up whilst watching and enjoy the stupidity. But it doesn't talk down to you, its a lot like League of Gentleman, Psychoville and shows like that where the comedy is obvious and sometimes very in your face but its intelligent and subtle at the same time.

Plus all the characters are growing on me, even when you've only seen them a little. I do hope Satan returns, that could lead to some funny gags, but mostly I just love watch Enma mess up and Hozuki being mean to him.

Then again "you will be swaddled with pants worn by a demon for 99 years" is the greatest punishment ever thought up! Of course Panty thieves are the worst of the worst!
