Ready for a taste of old school cartoonage?
We start with our old friend Pokémon. Right from the beginning.
Go, go Pokémon!
***SPOILERS***
Ohhh the opening credits bring back very good memories! It has been years since I watched the show, especially the old series. Didn't it used to come on Sky1 in the mornings?
Jebus I feel ancient!
We open with the game fighting turning into real fighting, a real trainer fight. Ash is watching it on the TV the night before he goes to get his Pokémon from Professor Oak. He goes to bed trying to figure out which Pokémon he should choose. He sleeps in late and has to run to the lab in his pyjamas.
He ends up running into Gary coming out of the lab after choosing his Pokémon.
So its time for Ash to get his Pokémon.... But all three of the starter Pokémon have gone. Thankfully Prof. Oak still has one special Pokémon left, Pikachu. Just it doesn't seem that Pikachu likes being handled very much.
Don't call Pikachu weird... Lesson learnt!
Ash and Pikachu have a heart to heart where Pikachu makes it obvious he doesn't like being confined in his Pokéball. Suddenly a Pidgey shows up, unfortunately Pikachu refuses to help so Ash attempts to capture the Pidgey himself. His attempts fail and Pikachu finds it very funny, suddenly Ash upsets a Spearow who goes after Pikachu.
After Pikachu fries it the Spearow calls upon a whole flock who chases after Ash and Pikachu.
After jumping into the water Ash is fished out of the water by a girl who tells him which way to go to the Pokéhospital. Poor Pikachu looks terrible and they are still being chased by Spearow.
After watching Ash put his body in the firing line for him Pikachu decides to jump in front of Ash and shock the flock of Spearow. Afterwards the bond is made as they watch an unidentified Pokémon sail into the distance in the sky.
I remember why Pokémon made such a good first impression. There have been many things that have different creatures but you'll only see them sparingly and the rest of the time you get to see normal bog standard animals. Straight from day one you are introduced to many Pokémon and it is made clear that these are the natural creatures of this world.
Ash is only 10?! I didn't remember that he was so young. Such a strange place to think it is alright to send a 10 year old out on an adventure.
I always have liked the fact that Pikachu didn't just love Ash because he had to, Pikachu has always had a mind of his own which is always fun.
So we are on our adventure? To capture all the Pokémon and become the best there ever was.
Ash is a good main character, he isn't annoying and is a nice person, which helps a lot seeing he's the main character for the show. We have had a glimpse of the main rival, Gary, who doesn't really seem that bad to be honest, just very cocky. And we have been introduced to the Prof. who just seems to be a normal grown up.
From episode 1 you know this is going to be a grand adventure and I can't wait to start it next episode properly!
