Pokémon : Ash catches a Pokémon

Episode 3

We've defeated Team Rocket and made it to Viridian Forest.

Now all Ash wants to do is catch a Pokémon!

***SPOILERS***

Wibble, wibble, wibble, wibble... and the Pokémon is caught.

So Ash's first Pokémon is a Caterpie.

Misty is freaked out by the Caterpie even if its in the Pokéball. And then out comes Caterpie. Unfortunately for Misty it seems that Caterpie really likes her.

So Ash decides to go without Misty but Misty ends up following them anyway. That night Pikachu and Caterpie spend the night talking to each other. In the morning Caterpie is sleeping right in front of Misty who tells him to get back in his Pokéball and so he does. Before Misty and Ash can fight too long a Pidgeotto flies down and Ash is determined to capture him so sends out... Caterpie... to prove Misty wrong that he's a weakling.

After Pikachu shocks the Pidgeotto Ash is able to capture it, so we're now two for two. Well in Viridian Forest at least.

Whilst Misty is having a go at Ash about his stupid strategy Team Rocket show up. They have shown up to capture the Pikachu. Ekans and Koffin are called once more, and whilst Ash is trying to be fair Team Rocket take the upper hand. It doesn't go well for Pidgeotto so instead Ash tries to attack Team Rocket himself.

GO CATERPIE! Poor little thing.

He defeats them with string shot, yay Caterpie! And for being so brave he nearly got a pat from Misty, just instead he turns into a Metapod. Well that is pretty speedy. The little thing is determined to become a Butterfree.

So Ash has finally caught Pokémon and is up to three Pokémon altogether. Interesting that he caught a Pidgeotto instead of a Pidgey, doesn't he still need to get a Pidgey if he wants to catch 'em all?

We'll find out again.

The story really was about how Pokémon have feelings themselves. It is something I feel in real life with real animals, sometimes people don't realize that their pets have feelings, they might not be able to talk to you and tell you how they feel but being treated like a prince/princess for most of their life then being told they are useless will probably hurt them as much as they'd hurt any human.

As far as the Ash/Misty argument is concerned I kind of get both of their points of view. It isn't really fair to hurt the Pokémon's feelings but at the same time you can't force someone to get over something that they fear or dislike. Waving Caterpie in Misty's face wasn't fair on Misty, yes she could have been nicer but she didn't hide the fact that it scared her, teaching Caterpie boundaries would have helped more than just blaming Misty for being scared.

Ash really does have a long way to go, not only does he need to realize that humans are just as delicate and fragile as Pokémon but he's got a long way to go when it comes to Pokémon themselves. As a old time trainer I too shuddered to think he'd send a newly caught Caterpie out to fight a Pidgeotto.

Crazy boy!

I can't actually remember the story of Caterpie, he's evolving very fast mainly I think to get approval from Misty. I'll be interested in seeing the story again purely because I want to know if he keeps the same personality and if he still has his thing about Misty.

We are being taught morals by Ash and his Pokémon. Very deep stuff.
