Makai Ouji : Devils and Realists : Party and Battle

Episode 7

It was quite an interesting and sad episode last week. The anime is brilliant at adding humor to very sad and delicate plots.

Not only was it quite sad for some of the characters but we also found out that the main character, for anyone not following my ramblings this would be Kevin, is an angel. A one winged angel at that.

Intriguing!

***SPOILERS***

We open on an opera, Camio is out enjoying himself it seems. Or maybe not. He is interested in the covenant that he made with Solomon all those years ago. I'm interested in learning more about that too.

Shakespeare is what is on the cards for Isaac and William. Dantalion is ready for it, he wants to be Claudius apparently. He's interrupted by Ophelia.... Or Sytry as we know him/her/demon.

KEVIN!!!!!!!!!!! KEVIN!!!!

Kevin has a favor for William so William has a favor to ask of Kevin. Ohh fun!

Later that night and Dantalion gets a visit from our old friend Gilles. Turns out its a great Sabbat tonight and three of the runners for Interim Leader will be there....

Meanwhile it turns out that William is directing the play, he gets attention and doesn't have to actually bother going on stage.

We also see Sytry's boss. Well not his boss his uncle.

So we have Grand Duchess of the South, Lady Astaroth. Grand Duke of the East, Lord Samael. Grand Duke of the West, Lord Baalberith. And then Grand Duke of the North Lord Beelzebub.

We get a flashback of Dantalion and Solomon together. Solomon seems so sweet but also seems to have a ruthless streak in him. Dantalion is awoken from his flashback to learn that William is in trouble.

Well at least William and Isaac have each other. Poor Kevin seems very worried. And they probably should be worried some huge legion of demons is leaking in the sky. Isaac is way too happy about this.

Sytry wants a reason to protect William? Then why the hell is he protecting him if he hasn't got a reason now? So Baalberith (Sytry's uncle) is trying to kill William and he's using demons that haven't got an agreement with Solomon. Kevin is watching over the proceedings looking rather Kevin-ish. Turns out that Kevin has put a safety charm on William which he uses to try and exorcise Dantalion (and Dantalion's butler is back!) Kevin loses but makes Dantalion very, VERY dangerous. So dangerous that he attacks William and has to be forced off him by Camio.

Well Camio is a lot better than the other two. It is always "elect me and I'll save you, elect me and I'll do this..." Camio just saves him.

Time for Shakespeare! At the last moment Hamlet is ill so William is forced to take the part. Ohhh Sytry.... And Dantalion... So Hamlet has Ophelia AND Claudius fighting over him in a basic cat fight? Good interpretation!

Ohhh I really loved this episode as we got to learn a little about some of the other demons. Shame that Samael doesn't seem to have much of a play in this anime as he was one hell of a cool looking character! He doesn't have anyone up for election though which is a pity!

I do like the different mix of episodes we get, this was another pretty laid back one but with such a big info dump on us in a way that doesn't feel like it. We get to meet the Grand Dukes, we learn that the utmost bad guy right now seems to be Baalberith, we get to see that not all the demons will stay away from William... It progresses the story so much without actually feeling like it did to the point that it did.

Plus it had Kevin being awesome because Kevin is just that good.

And Isaac was back.

A good show all around!

I like how the Grand Dukes have pretty much figured out that the three of them (Sytry, Dantalion and Camio) are all infatuated with William (apparently like they are) which goes a long way to understand why they try to help whilst also annoying him about choosing one of them. It really bugged me the line about "give me a reason to help you" and then it just had Dantalion and Camio come to save the day (oh and Kevin.) With a line like that you'd think that Sytry would have realized that saving someone he cares about is enough of a reason no matter who was attacking him. I guess I'll have to get over it though.

I have loved all the characters from the beginning and it didn't change this episode, William is wonderfully stubborn, Isaac is just goofy and the Demons are all uniquely weird and terribly wonderful in their own ways.

A part of me does kind of want another episode that has a non-threatening threat like the Killmoulis again, I enjoyed learning about a goblin creature I'd never heard of it would be interesting if they had more episodes like that.

I'm happy that the anime isn't trying to turn William into a nicer character, leaving him to be a realist all the way through I'd hate for him to become soft!

Another brilliant episode. Really beautiful as well.
