Felipe Massa's Form

So Felipe Massa can be quite a sore subject for people. He is a lovely man, a good sportsman, a kind soul and someone people like to support. But even people who support him because of this question whether he's really as good as his die hard fans believe.

So my feelings on Felipe?

Felipe wasn't a world champion to begin with. I liked him but he was way too eccentric and way too dangerous at times. His time at Ferrari with Michael Schumacher changed that, though you could still see the silly mistakes popping up time and time again.

By the time Schumi had left he was a good driver, on par with Jenson Button when he wanted to be. And in 2008 he deserved his Championship run, it was heartbreaking to see him lose it on the last corner as there was physically nothing else he could do to win the Championship. I felt sorry for him.

Now there are two trains of thought on Felipe from here on in. 2009 was a terrible year for Ferrari, their worst luck was Felipes life threatening injury. Most people say he hasn't been the same since.

For me it was losing the championship in 2008. He lost his confidence. Whereas Kimi showed flashes of brilliance in an under performing car, Felipe was no where. Of course the injury then added to that as he lost half a season and nearly died but it only added to his lack of confidence.

Since 2010 it has felt like Ferrari have kept him on because they felt sorry for him. They made excuse after excuse for him and he didn't need it. We all know what happened to him and we all understood that, but it looked silly keeping him on. Now it seems that Felipe has finally got a bit more life in him, out qualifying Fernando on a number of occasions and getting form back we haven't seen since 2008.

So was the gamble worth it?

No.

I like Felipe and am happy he's getting better but what happens when he gets another knock on his confidence? Should Ferrari keep giving him chances on the belief that Rob Smedley will be able to win races for him?

I see a lot of excuses being made for Felipe a lot of the time but I do feel like Felipe is too volatile. He gets knocked and that'll be it for 3 or 4 races then he isn't just costing himself a chance at a Championship but also his team. So then his team will be forced into backing Alonso and all they'll get then is flack by people who love Felipe because apparently Felipe should be given a chance, a chance that when he has it he squanders it.

Felipe needs to stay consistent but his lack of consistency has meant the worst for the team the last few years so he really needs to prove himself now. No more excuses. No more inconsistent performances. His fans can bleat on about unfairness in every second of a race but for everyone else this is the final chance for Felipe to prove he deserves a Ferrari seat.

Felipe is lovely, Felipe is a brilliant driver and it is about time Felipe started believing in himself.
