Red Dwarf X : Trojan

So the first Red Dwarf series since forever started this Thursday. I've been a lifelong Dwarfer so was so happy to hear the series was coming back!

Did it disappoint?

*SPOILERS BELOW* If you haven't seen the episode don't read on as it will include spoilers

For me it didn't!

It had all the charm and warmth of the Red Dwarf I grew up with.

In the first episode the crew encounter Rimmers brother Harold, Lister and the Cat try to buy a stir-o-matic and we learn about Swedish men and Mooses.

You should be able to sum up every Red Dwarf episode like this! It wasn't being over complicated, it didn't try too hard and it flowed so wonderfully it was like it has never been off air!

The pluses :

*Characters were back to their brilliant best! In Back to Earth it felt a little forced and because of the nature of the episode at times didn't feel right, but here it went back to the basic relationship between the boys from the Dwarf.
*Rimmer being Rimmer. It is always much fun when they just let Rimmer do his thing, in the episode we meet his brother Harold and see Rimmer actually getting the upper hand!
*Moose joke, I loved it, it felt so much like an old Dwarf joke. A funny off the wall conversation leading to a  moment where Lister can just troll Rimmer to his hearts content!

The problems with the last two series for me was that it changed a format that didn't need changing. I have nothing against Kachanski (or however you spell her name)  but her introduction changed the dynamic too much and then having the whole crew back, again as much as I actually liked the episodes, it again changed the dynamic. It has gone back to the basics and made the series (or this episode) so much better.

The negatives :

To be honest other than Krytens mask not much!

I understand the series needs to find its feet and fit in with the times so it was never going to be totally perfect but it was as close to perfect as I could hope for!

Can't wait for next episode!
