Doctor Who : The Power of Three

Mystical cubes have fallen overnight onto the Earth so the Doctor moves in with the Ponds to investigate.

The return or UNIT and Brian!

How long has it been since a proper invasion of Earth story?

*SPOILER WARNING* For those who are still yet to see it obviously don't look any further!

Sadly this episode failed on many levels.

The best part of the story was Brian, as he was in the dinosaur episode. And to be honest I'm very upset with Chibnell (the writer of both this and dinosaurs) and Moffat for not introducing him earlier! He is a wonderful and lovely character, he had me laughing and nearly crying all the way through. Mark Williams is a wonderfully underrated actor who has such an impact on all his characters.

Unfortunately even though the story was there the episode focused too much on the Ponds and not the invasion.

So these cubes fell to Earth and they don't do anything so humans take them home, put them in their work places and forget about them. Nearly a year later they start to move about and then start a countdown. What actually is happening is a member of the Shakri is trying to wipe the humans out before they spread out across the stars.

Read that paragraph again. I bet you wonder how it could go wrong?

Because that is all back story to the Ponds and Rory and Amy finally realizing their time with the Doctor is coming to an end. They have lives now, they have friends, they have Brian!

The Cubes spin about for like 3 minutes, countdown for another 5, the Doctor finds the ship within the next 2, the Shakri talk for about 5 and it looks promising, the Doctor waves the sonic about and that is it folks.

The story was quite sweet about the Ponds and its building up for the next episode which will see the back of the Ponds.

The sad thing is the actual alien invasion story could have been so brilliant that you can't mark it high because it was such a waste! And not even a waste, there where scary looking nurses kidnapping people with a robot girl.......... Never explained them or why they where kidnapping people.

I liked the ideas behind the episode but it really was a two part episode condensed into one, and when you are doing a series without two parters you CAN NOT write a two part episode into 45 minutes! Biggest shame is that they couldn't have just done this some other time, like last season instead of the ganger two parter which could have been a 1 part episode easily! And the sad thing is it would have been Chibnells masterpiece if it had had two parts!

As I've already said the big love of this episode is purely Brian, he was just wonderful as always! Sad its probably his last episode, would love to think that seeing next week is the last episode before Xmas the BBC would consider doing a Brian mini-webisode or something. Doubt it but it would be fun.

Overall a disappointment but not a terrible "Never watch it whatever you do" episode. Just go in it knowing that nothing will be explained and thinking of it as a start to the end of the Ponds and you'll be fine!

Out of 10 I'll give this episode 3.
