Mawaru Penguindrum : Then Devour Me Curry-geously

Episode 3

Last episode we were introduced to Ringo and her "fate". We also got a look at her weird diary...

And what is this Penguindrum that Shou and Kanba have been sent to find?

***SPOILERS***

Ringo is remembering her past, her mothers curry and her parents calling her their "precious little treasure". "Curry eaten with the people you love tastes like love" what a sweet sentiment!

Not that I personally like curry very much..... And that statement means naught!

Ringo is up making  toast with Ringo loves Keiju on it. She is interrupted by her mum who is telling her that she has to have her dinner on her own tonight but tonight is the 20th which is apparently curry night for the family. It seems that their tradition is ending. So Ringo decides to make Keiju curray.

Why are they bound by fate I wonder?

I love the survival strategy music, I feel like attempting to sing along.

Still in handcuffs the boys are asked about Penguindrum. Shou makes the silly mistake of saying that the whole thing is an illusion. He doesn't get his self thrown down a hole this time, instead the possessed Himari drinks a load of milk (in a cow suit), apparently Himari can't drink milk. This doesn't make them believe anything so the possession spirit ends Himari's life again. After they slap the hat back on her Shou does get his fall down his hole and the scene changes to the boys going to Ringo's home.

Kanba breaks in to look for the Pengiundrum. Shou doesn't like the thought of going into Ringo's room even though she is stalking their teacher so Kanba goes in with his evil little penguin.

Whilst this is going on Ringo is out picking up the ingredients for her curry. Soon she is on her way up the stairs to her home. No matter how weird Ringo is the whole curry monologue is really adorable. We then get a flashback to when she was younger and so was Keiju, he was only just leaving school there on curry night. So what connection does he have with her family?

The boys follow her on the train, Kanba thinks the curry could be the Penguindrum, the ingredients being some sort of code. They also notice that she is taking it to their teachers place. She has a day dream about him loving her curry but then when reality comes back a girl opens the door instead of Keiju. Apparently Keiju has told this lady that it is curry day and she's also made him a curry but Ringo is certain that he has to eat her curry. Ringo swaps the ladies curry with her own, not a smart idea really because Keiju will think it was made by the lady.... Silly Ringo.

She's out the back window though and running away with the pan. Her imagination is one of the best I've seen so far, shouting at a cat for no reason at all.

Himari is hit by the fish that the cat was holding and a fight starts out between the cat and 3. which results in Ringo... On the floor... Covered in curry.

Yeah Himari looks like she can be quite evil when she wants to be. And it turns out that fate has brought them all together and now Ringo is having dinner with them. Himari is so cute, when Ringo looks down she does her best to make her happy and invites her to come over whenever she wants.

Kanba is straightforward as always and comes out with it "did you have something important to do today?" ohh Kanba I love you! It turns out that the events kinda played out the way her diary said it would. Strange right?

Soo another episode down and what have we learnt?

Ringo is following a destiny in her diary and apparently has a "Penguindrum" that whoever is possessing Himari wants the boys to grab.

Ringo seems to think her destiny is with some older guy that has some family connections.

And penguins really are a godly creature even as little anime blobby looking penguins.

The episode was really quite funny, I love how no matter how serious Kanba and Shou try to be they have these little penguins doing stupid things (eating plums, getting their heads covered in gum) in the background you can giggle about.

The whole fate and destiny thing is quite interesting, I mean it has to be some sort of fate that Ringo just happened to bump into the girl that is being possessed and sent her older brothers out to stalk her right? I mean it can't be a coincidence!

To be honest though I'm more interested in Ringo's story then in the boys and Himari, even if Himari is like my favorite character. I know it is a weird one but there is something heartbreaking in this story, the whole curry thing and her ideas on what curry is and means to people as well as her destiny being with Keiju who just so happens to have some sort of family, and quite close I'd say, connection.

The episodes are brilliant to watch, sometimes watching anything can feel like a chore no matter how much you love it, but three episodes in and I'm always left wanting more. They don't let any element of the show outshine the rest of the episode. Everything seems to interlink as well which is half the fun! Now that Himari is friends with Ringo how easy will it be for the boys to stalk her?

Plus Himari in a cow suit! What more can you ask for?

For anyone that waited for this blog I apologize but it was a wonderful episode and worth the wait (if not for my rambling blog then for the episode itself!)
