Kore wa Zombie Desu ka? : Yes I'm a magical girl

Series 1, Episode 1

Is this a Zombie?

This anime follows Aikawa Ayumu who really is a zombie. Join us every Thursday to follow Ayumu's random adventures and the ups and downs of his life as a student (and also a zombie.)

This will be a staple of our Thursdays for a while as there are two series, count them, two! to cover. The second series being Kore wa Zombie Desu ka? Of the Dead.

So who are the cast? What is the plot? And men!
(Come on you missed it)

***SPOILER***

A news report is telling everyone to take an umbrella with them as there is a chance of rain, a boy walks down the stairs tells someone drinking tea that he is going out and leaves for school.

"I thought these comfortable days would last forever"

Whilst walking home a car is about to hit a cat, Ayumu runs in front of the car and saves the cat..... And announces to the world that he is a zombie. Whilst being sent flying through the air by the impact somehow Ayumu loses all his clothes... Yeah.

With the brilliant message of "The protagonist of this anime is a Zombie. Don't try this at home" I think we know what kind of show this will be already.

Anyway when Ayumu finally gets home we find out the women he was talking to earlier is Yuu, she seems not to be able to talk instead communicating to Ayumu by writing on a note pad. It also seems that Ayumu has a crush on Yuu having wild fantasies based on very little.

It turns out Yuu turned him into a zombie after he was killed (sword through the back of the chest). Yuu is actually Eucliwood Hellscythe, Necromancer of the underworld. They've been living together for a month now. As soon as this small piece of information is divulged Ayumu gets a call from his friend that there has been another mystery murder in the neighborhood and he goes out looking for clues.

Whilst sitting in the graveyard he hears the sound of a chainsaw and an obvious fight. It turns out to be a girl in pink (avec pink chainsaw) who comes falling out of the sky at his feet. He immediately thinks she's the murderer, but she's actually fighting a giant bear type thing that spears Ayumu with its claws. The pink clad warrior doesn't do much to help performing a "kick" that actually sawed Ayumu in half before attacking the giant bear thing.

The pink girl is Prodigious Masou-Shoujo of Virie Haruna. The thing she attacked was a Megalo Kumacchi (B Class one at that!).

She goes to erase his memories but only manages to end up naked and kicking Ayumu in the face for being a pervert. She's lost her magic. So whilst she's standing around in the buff his legs are on top of a grave stone.

Back at home and Haruna has joined Ayumu and Yuu. She's lost her magic so decided it was Ayumu's fault and she'll stay with them till she finds out the problem. He seems to take it quite well to be honest, though I guess being a zombie kind of stops these things being weird.

Haruna has a problem with a mobile phone.

Another Megalo seems to be hanging about outside his house and detected Haruna's presence. At school and Ayumu is suffering in the sunlight, drying out and looking truly zombie like.

Ayumu worries when his friend says he wants to come to his house and play a zombie game that he would be ruined if he found out that he lived with "two beautiful girls". Whilst sitting in the classroom waiting for the sun to go down the Megalo... Well I wouldn't like to say what it did to the door before it actually walked in. Apparently it wants Ayumu. Haruna appears in the window and the Megalo turns into (AA Class) a lobster. Ohhh it is so funny! It appears Ayumu is attracting the Megalo...

Haruna tries to transform but it doesn't work. Or it does for seconds. The lobster announces he has no interest in a Masou-Shoujo that is drained of magic, Ayumu stands in front of the lobsters attacks... Or is it a crayfish? He attacks it with his ever increasing percentage attacks... And breaks his arm.

..................... He uses the chainsaw to become a Masou-Shoujo........... Pink ribbons..... Pink dress..... Pink bow........ Pink underwear............. Zombie in pink........

You see why I like this?

And the bloody lobster thing had the balls to call Ayumu a pervert! In his pink stripy pants...."You cross-dressing pervert"....

He lands in the yard were all his class mates see him dressed in pink including his best friend.

And Yuu is still sitting at home drinking tea.

So episode 1?

It makes an impression.

The thing is my review sounds so random and weird but to be honest the episode is light but still serious. It doesn't go over the top like Nyaruko-san it is more along the lines of Penguindrum/Fairy Tail were you get the funny bits but you have a driving story. Yes all the Masou-Shoujo stuff is fun but we have to remember Ayumu's main goal is to find his murderer.

What I want to know is why is he living on his own if he's still at school anyways?!

What I really like about this episode is it gave you everything you need to know without just dumping a whole load of heavy stuff on you. You found out that Ayumu is a zombie, how he became a zombie, that Yuu turned him into a zombie and you are introduced to Haruna naturally. But there was still a good deal of things going on onscreen without you finding yourself getting bored.

I quite like the Megalo's, they seem quite interesting as well as adding to the fun. They do seem to look quite scary, even when they start talking their actual appearance seems quite chilling.

So what am I looking forward to in this series?

Well first and fore mostly the plot. It is there from episode one. He was murdered, who murdered him?

Also what happened to Haruna's magic?

Why can't Yuu talk?

So not only is the story (or at least the first story) introduced there are lots of questions waiting to be answered.

I also can't wait to see how the characters themselves develop, in one episode they actually manage to capture your attention. Sometimes it takes a while to warm to characters (Sword Art Online/Karneval) but from day one you are invested into these and you don't know why.

I also like how even though there is bright sunlight in parts of the episode it manages to feel dark and foreboding at all times. I guess it is what a anime following a zombie should have!

A good strong start to the season for Zombies, and I guess I have to say a happy start to Zombie Thursdays!
