The Lorax

So The Lorax has came out on DVD, I really wanted to see it in the cinema but with the release of so many films in such a short period of time our cinema kind of didn't show it at times me and my boyfriend could go and watch it, it ended up being shown for a week or so then being demoted to Kids AM for the rest of its run (and that is only on Saturdays I believe.)

So the moment it came out on DVD I brought it....

******SPOILERS PAST THIS POINT FOR ANYONE WHO HASN'T WATCHED THE FILM*****

OK so the book of The Lorax doesn't have much in it so they had to have this whole other story set around it to make it work, and I loved the story that they made to make it work!

The story is set in Thneedville, a city with no wildlife or plants. Everything is artificial and they have to buy their air from a big corporation (no surprise o'Hare was the bad guy and owner of the big corporation.)

The main character, Ted, is out to find out how to get a tree to make the girl of his dreams, Audrey, fall in love with him.

After being told by his Granny that if he wants to find a tree he has to talk to the Once-ler, Ted left the city to find the recluse in the wasteland beyond.

The story he hears is the actual Lorax story, of a man who cut down all the trees even if when the Lorax (who speaks for the trees) warns him not too. He grows his company to make Thneeds, killing the land and driving the wildlife away. When he finally cuts down the last tree he is left on his own in the wasteland that used to be a beautiful country side filled with trees.

After telling Ted the story, it took one or two trips back and forward to get the whole story where o'Hare also notices he's left town and threatens him, the Once-ler gives Ted the last Truffala tree.

The story ends with Ted, Audrey and Granny finally planting the seed and fully ends with the Once-ler being reunited with the Lorax whilst trees are starting to sprout in the wasteland.

I loved the film, I thought it was good fun and heart warming. The songs were all really catchy and the voice acting was really good.

The Granny was probably my favorite character, she was wise but funny.

Even if the songs are much more modern then in most other Dr Suess films recently it still fit in really well with the story and the feel of everything.

The thing I was really impressed with though is that it managed to give children a good message about their environment and the world in general without being preachy and in your face!

The Once-ler was a sweet character who you could relate to, he was the "bad" guy but he felt remorse, he did the "bad" things to get attention off of his family and do something great for the world. It all back fired on him and he was a grumpy git when talking to Ted but he had to find someone who could change the world.

If I had to rate the film I'd give it 7.8/10 .

And of course it ended with the quote which I do love so will repeat it twice....

Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better, it's not.
